Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Crafts Center

Beppu: A Renowned Center of Traditional Bamboo Craft in Japan

Beppu City in Oita Prefecture has long been known for its rich supply of high-quality madake (Japanese timber bamboo), which has fostered the development of a vibrant bamboo craft tradition. In 1979, “Beppu Bamboo Crafts” were officially designated as a Traditional Craft of Japan by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (now the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry).

To carry this tradition into the future, the Beppu City Traditional Bamboo Crafts Center was established. This facility serves as a base for connecting Beppu’s craftsmanship with tourism, offering visitors opportunities to learn about, observe, and try their hand at traditional bamboo work.

Explore the Techniques and Aesthetic of Bamboo through Exhibits

The center’s Main Exhibition Room features a wide range of displays including various bamboo types, crafting tools, and traditional techniques. At the core of Beppu bamboo craftsmanship is a traditional weaving technique known as "Henso" (編組), in which thin bamboo strips are handwoven to create both structure and decorative patterns.

Exhibits include a variety of weaving styles such as ajiro-ami (diagonal weave), mutsume-ami (hexagonal weave), and asanoha-ami (hemp leaf weave). These demonstrate the blend of practicality and beauty found in bamboo crafts.

Visitors can also admire historical masterpieces from the Meiji period to the present, along with works by officially certified traditional craftsmen, designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Hands-on Experience with Bamboo: Craft Workshops

In addition to the exhibits, the center offers hands-on bamboo craft learning programs, where visitors can try their hand at traditional techniques. The most popular activities include making a Shikainami Flower Basket—a classic wave-patterned basket—and a Bamboo Bell, which is known for its gentle, pleasant tone and tactile appeal.

The Shikainami Flower Basket program takes approximately 60 minutes, while the Bamboo Bell program takes about 40 minutes to complete. Through the crafting process, participants gain a deeper appreciation for the complexity and beauty of traditional bamboo work.

※Workshops require advance reservations at least one week prior. Available for individuals and group.

Shop, Relax, and Take Home a Piece of the Tradition

The on-site Museum Shop "Bamboo Product Sales Corner" features a wide variety of items crafted by bamboo artisans from within Oita Prefecture. From everyday items like chopsticks and baskets to artistic one-of-a-kind pieces, there’s something for everyone. These beautifully crafted works make excellent souvenirs or thoughtful gifts.

Additionally, the shop includes a café counter where visitors can enjoy coffee and other beverages while gazing out at the surrounding bamboo grove. It’s the perfect place to unwind after exploring the exhibits or participating in a craft workshop.
