Kitakyushu City Hiagari Purification Center Administration Building (Visitor Center)

Clean Water, Protecting Our Future ― Learning About the Environment Through Sewage Systems

This facility protects Kitakyushu City's natural and living environments by purifying wastewater and discharging it into the sea, while also utilizing natural energy and effectively using sewerage resources. After learning about the facility overview and sewerage systems, visitors tour the premises.

The Hiagari Purification Center, designed as a combined sewer system, was completed and began operations in April 1970. Its current treatment capacity is 263,000 cubic meters per day. It treats sewage from Kokura Kita Ward, Tobata Ward, and parts of Kokura Minami Ward and Yahata Higashi Ward using the activated sludge process, discharging the treated effluent into the mouth of the Tōkai Bay.

On April 23, 2015, the management building of the Hiagari Purification Center was renovated and reopened as a “Visitor Center,” serving as a new hub for sewerage and environmental learning.

Key Points

  1. Through experiences like projection mapping and heavy rain simulations inside the Visitor Center, visitors can deepen their understanding of Kitakyushu City's sewerage projects and the Hiagari Purification Center.

  2. We can suggest plans tailored to your available time.

  3. Even on rainy days, you can learn about the facility overview through the indoor exhibits.

  4. The building is barrier-free (ramps, elevators, multi-purpose restrooms).

  5. We distribute manhole cards free of charge to visitors who tour the Hiagari Purification Center (Visitor Center).

What you can experience

At this facility, you can enjoy hands-on learning experiences that spark interest in Kitakyushu City's sewerage projects.

1. View videos in the presentation room
You can watch videos showing “the flow of sewage from homes to the treatment plant” and “the treatment process inside the plant.”

2. Water Cycle Diorama Theater
This theater uses projection mapping combined with a topographical model and video to introduce the water cycle and the role of sewer systems within it.

3. Interactive Exhibits
Experience simulations of flood damage caused by heavy rains and other events, as well as hands-on operation of sewer inspection robots.

4. Manhole Square Plaza
This plaza displays design manhole covers from our city and neighboring municipalities, as well as manhole covers donated from overseas. It also exhibits large-scale pumps and sewer pipes that were actually used in operation.
