Karatsu Castle: A Coastal Stronghold of Grace and History

Perched on a hill overlooking the Genkai Sea, Karatsu Castle — also known as Maizuru Castle — is a place where elegance and history harmonize. Constructed in the early 17th century by Terazawa Hirotaka, a feudal lord who served under Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the castle remains a powerful symbol of Karatsu’s historical heritage and regional identity.

A Tapestry of Seasons

Karatsu Castle is known for its seasonal beauty. Around 200 cherry trees bloom in late March, wrapping the grounds in soft pink hues. In late April to early May, century-old wisteria flowers cascade over the trellises, creating a fragrant, dreamy passage. Autumn transforms the hill into a palette of crimson and gold, setting the castle against a vibrant natural backdrop.

Panoramic Views from the Castle Keep

Climb to the fifth floor of the castle keep and you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the Genkai Sea, the iconic Niji-no-Matsubara pine grove (one of Japan’s three great pine forests), and the historic townscape of Karatsu. These sights form a perfect harmony between land, sea, and sky.

Living Heritage Inside the Keep

Inside the keep, visitors can explore exhibitions on the castle’s history, including displays of samurai armor, Karatsu ware, and other cultural artifacts. The current tenshu (main keep), completed in 1966, reflects the community’s enduring respect for the castle’s historical significance and aesthetic beauty.
