Tagajo Nanmon (Tagajo South Gate): The Grand Entrance of Ancient Japan Reborn

2025 – A Long-Awaited Opening

First established in 724, Tagajo served as a political, military, and cultural center of Japan’s Tohoku region. Its main entrance, the Tagajo Nanmon (Tagajo South Gate), was reopened to the public in April 2025 after years of careful reconstruction. Faithfully rebuilt based on the latest archaeological research, the gate revives its appearance from some 1,300 years ago and now stands as a new landmark symbolizing Japan’s ancient history.

Highlights of the Tagajo Nanmon

1. A Monument to the Authority of the Ancient Ritsuryo State
The Tagajo Nanmon was the principal entrance to Tagajo and functioned as the “gateway to Tohoku” in ancient times. The recent reconstruction meticulously reproduced every detail, from pillars and roof tiles to painted surfaces, allowing visitors to feel as though they have stepped back into the Nara period.

2. Reconstruction Based on Excavation and Traditional Craftsmanship
Using the results of extensive excavations and historical studies, the Tagajo Nanmon was rebuilt employing traditional construction techniques. More than a tourist attraction, it represents a “fusion of archaeology and architecture,” offering visitors insight into both historical and academic value.

3. Exploring the Expansive Historic Site
The remains of Tagajo, designated a National Special Historic Site, cover a vast area. Starting from the Tagajo Nanmon, visitors can walk through the ruins and experience the scale of an ancient city. The site is surrounded by rich natural scenery, making it a pleasant place to enjoy seasonal landscapes along with historical exploration.

4. Encountering the National Treasure “Tagajo-hi” (Tagajo Monument)
Just a short distance from the Tagajo Nanmon stands the Tagajo-hi (Tagajo Monument), designated as a National Treasure. Counted among Japan’s “Three Ancient Inscriptions,” this stone stele records the foundation and history of Tagajo, making it an invaluable historical source. Visiting the gate and the monument together deepens one’s understanding of ancient Tohoku.

An Ancient Gateway to the Future

The reopening of the Tagajo Nanmon in 2025 adds a new highlight to travel in the Tohoku region. Far more than a simple reconstruction, it symbolizes the scale and spirit of ancient Japan, brought vividly into the present day. Paired with the National Treasure Tagajo-hi, it offers travelers a rare opportunity to experience the living history of ancient Tohoku.
