"Tenshin: A Masterpiece of Tradition and Innovation from Kitakyushu

Where Legacy Meets the Art of Craftsmanship

Mizokami Sake Brewery was founded in 1844, during the Kōka era of the Edo period, and has a history of nearly 180 years. Originally based in Nakatsu City, Ōita Prefecture, the brewery produced sake under the brand name "Tsurutenshin", inspired by the auspicious image of a crane soaring in the sky.

In 1931, the brewery discovered a source of pure spring water at the foot of Mt. Sarakura in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture. The area's naturally cool valley climate also provided ideal conditions for kanzukuri, or winter brewing. This led to the relocation of the brewery to its current location.

At that time, the brand name was changed to "Tenshin", and the sake has since become a beloved local brew of Kitakyushu.

The Essence of "Tenshin" – Crafted for the Culinary Table

Tenshin is not merely a drink; it is a dining companion designed to elevate fine cuisine. Using locally grown rice from Kitakyushu and the region’s pure spring water, the brew reveals a mellow profile with fruity aromatics and a silky finish. The label comes in variations such as Aka-Tenshin (Red) and Kuro-Tenshin (Black), distinguished by subtle flavor nuances and elegant presentation. It’s a sake made not just to sip—but to savor slowly, ideally across a multi-course Japanese meal or fine international fare.

Private Tours & Annual Events

For travelers who seek authenticity and intimacy in their cultural experiences, Mizokami Sake Brewery offers private tours (by reservation only). Guests are welcomed into the historic grounds, where they can witness the brewing process, feel the reverence of tradition, and of course, taste the difference. Each March, the annual “Kura-biraki” (brewery opening) invites guests to sample freshly pressed seasonal sakes, many of which are not available elsewhere.

Getting There – The Hidden Pearl of Kitakyushu

Though tucked away from the typical tourist trail, Mizokami Sake Brewery is easily accessible. Just a 10-minute drive from JR Yahata Station or a short walk from the Nishitetsu Katsuyama bus stop, the journey itself reveals local scenery and quiet charm—hallmarks of Japan’s less-discovered luxury.
