Introduction: Escape into a World of Art and Tranquility

While Hiroshima is widely known for its historical landmarks, tucked away in the coastal city of Otake lies a serene sanctuary for art lovers—the Simose Museum. Founded to preserve and share the exquisite art collection passed down to its current director, Yumiko Shimose, from the museum’s original founders, Fukuei and Shizuko Shimose, the museum is deeply rooted in a mission to celebrate and promote Japanese culture.

Since opening in March 2023, Simose Museum has continued to collect, preserve, and research fine art and crafts from around the world. Through thoughtfully curated exhibitions, it contributes to the cultural landscape of Hiroshima and beyond. The museum’s stunning modern architecture harmonizes with the natural beauty of the Seto Inland Sea, offering visitors an exclusive and immersive art experience.

A Masterpiece Where Architecture Meets Nature

The museum consists of three main structures—the Entrance Hall, Exhibition Hall, and Administration Building—aligned in parallel with the coastline. These buildings are visually connected by a striking 10-meter-long, 8.5-meter-high mirrored glass, which reflects the surrounding scenery and magnifies the breathtaking views of the Seto Inland Sea.

A reflecting pool along the seaside elevates the dreamlike ambiance, where eight rooms covered in vibrant colored glass float gracefully above the water. Their colorful facades provide a striking contrast to the minimalist design.

Adjacent to the museum, the Émile Gallé Garden blooms with seasonal flowers, adding a rich layer of natural beauty. The mirrored glass reflect this landscape, creating the illusion that the museum is part of the scenery itself.

The SIMOSE Collection

Yumiko Shimose, president of Marui Sangyo Co., Ltd., inherited the collection from her predecessors, founders Fukue and Shizuko Shimose, and it gradually took form over half a century. The collection includes about 500 items, such as hina dolls, doll furnishings, and gosho dolls—all gathered with wishes for children's growth and a peaceful world—as well as modern paintings from Japan and the West, and Western handicrafts.

An Elegant Café with a View of the Seto Inland Sea

Make your visit complete with a stop at the museum’s refined café, where you can unwind while gazing out over the sparkling Seto Inland Sea. The café features a selection of handcrafted desserts made with locally sourced Setouchi fruits, alongside sandwiches, premium coffee, and fine teas—a perfect pairing for a day of cultural exploration.
