Tranquility of the Castle Keep and Nighttime Glow: A Year-Round Journey Through Uwajima Castle

From a mountaintop perch, this "petit fortress" captivates with its beauty

Situated along the Uwa Sea in southern Ehime Prefecture, the port city of Uwajima presents a stunning sight: Uwajima Castle standing sentinel atop a hill, as if watching over the town from above. Built in the early Edo period, this precious cultural treasure represents one of Japan's twelve remaining original castle keeps. Perched on its hilltop location, the castle evokes a quiet sense of awe regardless of season or time of day.

A Historic Fortress and the Romance of the Date Clan

Constructed in 1601 by master castle builder Tōdō Takatora, Uwajima Castle later came under the rule of the Date clan—an offshoot of the Sendai domain. They established this southern outpost of Date culture, creating a unique castle town that thrives to this day.

The three-storied keep visitors see today was reconstructed around 1666 and stands as one of the few remaining wooden, original castle keeps in Japan. Though modest in ornamentation, its sturdy elegance radiates samurai pride and dignity. Ancient moss-covered stone walls and the historic well site called "Ido-maru" reveal layers of history with each step.

The Castle Dressed in Four Seasons

Uwajima Castle's true magic lies in how it transforms with the changing seasons.

In spring, cherry blossoms surround the keep like clouds of flowers—a quintessential Japanese scene of castle and cherry blossom harmony.

Summer brings striking contrasts between deep greens and stone walls. During fireworks festivals, the night sky explodes with color against the castle's silhouette over Uwajima harbor.

Fall offers peaceful walks through the castle grounds, where greenery still clings to the mountain in the crisp air.

Winter occasionally dusts the castle with snow, creating timeless scenes that echo historic photographs—pure serenity and dignity.

A Daytime Gem of Tranquil Beauty

In daylight, Uwajima Castle reveals its full splendor under natural light. From the main keep and inner bailey, sweeping views encompass both the city below and the vast Uwa Sea beyond—a perfect blend of natural beauty and historical atmosphere.

The castle sits just a 20-minute walk from JR Uwajima Station, making it ideal for a leisurely visit while exploring the city.
