Wakayama Castle

A Grand Castle Towering Over the Center of Wakayama

Just a short walk from Nankai Wakayamashi Station, a striking white castle rises in the heart of the city.
This is Wakayama Castle, once the home of the powerful Kishu Tokugawa clan—one of the three prestigious Tokugawa families during the Edo period.
Originally built in 1585 by Toyotomi Hidenaga under the orders of his brother, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the castle became the domain of the Tokugawa family in 1619.

The current main keep was reconstructed in 1958, but the original grandeur and elegance remain.
Surrounded by seasonal beauty, the castle grounds still carry a timeless air of serenity and strength.

Breathtaking Views from the Castle Keep

One of Wakayama Castle’s biggest highlights is its panoramic view.
From the top of the keep, you can overlook the entire city of Wakayama. On clear days, you can even see the Kinokawa River, Awaji Island, and the distant shores of Shikoku.
The lush greenery below, framed by neatly arranged stone walls and distant mountains, creates a scene straight out of a historical painting.

In spring, around 450 cherry trees bloom around the castle, making it a beloved spot for hanami (flower viewing).
Many visitors share their surprise on social media, calling the scenery “far more beautiful than expected” and “incredibly photogenic.”

Bridges, Gardens, and a Zoo: History Comes to Life

The castle park is home to several structures that evoke the atmosphere of the past.
One must-see spot is the Ohashi Roka, a covered bridge reconstructed in 2006. Once used exclusively by the feudal lord, the bridge features a rare angled design that crosses the inner moat, adding a mysterious charm to the site.

Inside the park, you’ll also find a free-entry zoo, perfect for families, as well as the Nishinomaru Garden (Momijidani Garden)—a traditional Japanese garden that offers peaceful strolls and seasonal beauty.

Wakayama Castle truly brings together history and relaxation in one unforgettable destination.

A Place Where History and Calm Intertwine

Wakayama Castle is more than just a sightseeing spot.
The moss-covered stone paths once walked by samurai, the sound of rustling leaves, and the lingering presence of history invite every visitor to slow down and reflect.

When you feel the need to escape the modern world and take a quiet journey through time, this is the place to go.
Stand atop the castle keep, gaze out across the ancient land of Wakayama, and let the long history of Japan gently wash over you.
