Viewing Area of the Former Main Office of the Government-Operated Yawata Steel Works

The state-run Yawata Iron Works, which began operations in 1901, contributed to the modernization of Japanese industry and laid the foundation for the development of the industrial city of Kitakyushu. Buildings from its early days still stand today and are part of the “Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding, and Coal Mining,” which was inscribed on the World Heritage List in July 2015.

Although these facilities are not open to the public because they are located within the steelworks grounds, which are still in operation, you can view the “Former Main Office” (completed in 1899), a component asset of the site, from this observation area. We invite you to take in this industrial landscape that spans more than a century.
