A Peaceful Garden with Views of Mt. Fuji — Experience Imperial History at Chichibunomiya Memorial Park

A Place Where Imperial History and Seasonal Nature Live On

Located in Gotemba City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Chichibunomiya Memorial Park is a historic garden created on the former villa grounds where Prince Chichibu Yasuhito and Princess Setsuko spent approximately ten years during and after World War II.

In accordance with the will of Princess Setsuko, the property was bequeathed to the City of Gotemba and opened to the public in 2003.

Spanning approximately 18,000 tsubo (about 60,000 square meters), the expansive grounds are filled with seasonal flowers and native plants, offering beautiful natural scenery unique to the foothills of Mt. Fuji.

Within the park, visitors can explore a traditional thatched-roof main residence estimated to be around 300 years old, a memorial museum, and the Chichibunomiya Memorial Garden, all surrounded by an atmosphere of quiet elegance.

From the weeping cherry blossoms in spring and fresh greenery in early summer to the vivid autumn foliage, the park reveals completely different scenery throughout the year — one of the many reasons visitors return season after season.

Experience the Charm of Chichibunomiya Memorial Park Through History and Nature

1. Discover Japanese History Through an Imperial Villa

One of the park’s greatest attractions is the opportunity to experience the actual place where members of the Imperial Family once lived.

The thatched-roof main residence preserved within the grounds has a history of approximately 300 years and is now designated as a cultural property by Gotemba City.

Inside the memorial museum, visitors can view furniture and household items once used by the royal couple, offering a glimpse into daily life during the turbulent wartime and postwar years.

The park also preserves historical features such as an air-raid shelter and the pottery kiln known as “Sanmine-gama,” allowing visitors to experience aspects of the lifestyle and culture of the era.

More than simply a sightseeing garden, the park offers a chance to spend time in a place where history still quietly remains.

2. Beautiful Gardens That Change with the Seasons

At Chichibunomiya Memorial Park, visitors can enjoy the beauty of nature throughout the changing seasons.

The grounds are home to a variety of plants, including wildflowers loved by Prince and Princess Chichibu, as well as cherry blossoms, hydrangeas, and autumn foliage.

One of the park’s most famous sights is the over-130-year-old weeping cherry tree that appears to embrace the historic main residence.

The illuminated cherry blossoms at night have even been recognized as part of the Japan Night View Heritage.

Seasonal events such as the autumn foliage festival, exhibitions, and cultural programs are also held throughout the year, offering new scenery and experiences with every visit.

As visitors stroll through the peaceful gardens, they can enjoy the clear air and seasonal beauty unique to the foothills of Mt. Fuji.

3. An Easy Stop While Exploring the Mt. Fuji Area

Chichibunomiya Memorial Park is also conveniently located just a three-minute drive from the Gotemba IC interchange on the Tomei Expressway.

Many travelers combine a visit with sightseeing around Mt. Fuji or shopping at Gotemba Premium Outlets, making it a popular stop during road trips through the area.

The park is also accessible by bus or taxi from JR Gotemba Station, and a free shuttle bus service is available on designated operating days.
Ample on-site parking, including spaces for large vehicles, makes it easy for visitors to enjoy the park’s history and natural beauty at a relaxed pace.

A Quiet Moment at the Foot of Mt. Fuji

Chichibunomiya Memorial Park is more than simply a place to admire gardens.

It is a place to experience imperial history, appreciate the beauty of the changing seasons, and spend time in peaceful surroundings.

The natural scenery of Gotemba beneath Mt. Fuji, the historic architecture, and the gardens that transform throughout the year together create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else.
