■ A Historic Shrine at the Foot of Mount Adachi

Nestled at the foot of Mount Adachi in Kitakyushu, Adachiyama Myoken Shrine is a historic place of worship surrounded by greenery.

The shrine traces its origins back to 770, when it was founded by Wake no Kiyomaro. Today, the Lower Shrine is easily accessible and is loved by local residents as a place to pray, enjoy seasonal scenery, and connect with the history of the area.

The shrine also has an Upper Shrine near the summit of Mount Myoken, at an elevation of 519 meters. It can be reached by hiking for about 90 minutes from the Lower Shrine and marks the original site where the shrine was first established.

■ Look for the Shrine's Unusual Guardian Boars

One of the most memorable sights at Adachiyama Myoken Shrine is its guardian boars.

Unlike the guardian dogs commonly seen at Japanese shrines, this shrine has pairs of stone boars known as koma-inoshishi.

Their presence comes from a legend associated with Wake no Kiyomaro. According to tradition, hundreds of wild boars helped him escape from pursuers when he was traveling to Usa. Since then, boars have been regarded as messengers of the deity at shrines connected with Kiyomaro.

The tradition is particularly rare in Japan, making these guardian boars one of the shrine's most distinctive features.

■ A Shrine Known for Healthy Legs

Adachiyama Myoken Shrine is also associated with healthy legs.

This connection comes from the story of Wake no Kiyomaro, who is said to have recovered from an injured leg after praying at Mount Adachi.

Today, the shrine is popular among hikers and people who pray for healthy legs. One of its charms, the Kenkyaku Mamori, is shaped like a traditional straw sandal and is associated with walking and leg health.

For travelers interested in the relationship between Japanese legends and local religious traditions, this is a particularly interesting aspect of the shrine.

■ Cherry Blossoms and Views of Kokura

The shrine grounds offer a peaceful setting throughout the year, but spring is especially beautiful.

Various types of cherry trees bloom around the grounds, including Kawazu cherry, Somei Yoshino, weeping cherry, and double-flowered cherry trees. Their different blooming periods allow visitors to enjoy cherry blossoms over a longer part of the season.

From in front of the worship hall, visitors can also look out over Kokura City.

The combination of the shrine, surrounding greenery, and city views makes the grounds a pleasant place to take a leisurely walk.

■ Festivals and Traditional Events

Traditional events take place throughout the year at Adachiyama Myoken Shrine.

The Spring Grand Festival, held in mid-April, is one of the shrine's most important annual events. It includes various traditional performances and offerings, such as tea ceremony, koto music, kagura, and Japanese dance.

Other events include Setsubun celebrations, summer purification rituals, and an autumn festival, allowing visitors to experience different aspects of Japanese shrine culture throughout the year.
