Akashi Castle: A Gateway to Japan’s History in Hyōgo

Introduction

Akashi Castle, located in Hyōgo Prefecture’s Akashi City, was constructed in 1619 under the orders of Tokugawa shogun Hidetada by the feudal lord Ogasawara Tadazane. Strategically positioned along the Sanyōdō highway and facing the Seto Inland Sea, Akashi served as a crucial junction for travel to Awaji Island and Shikoku. The Tokugawa shogunate regarded it as an important stronghold to balance western Japan’s powerful tozama lords, alongside the famed Himeji Castle. Today, Akashi Castle is recognized as one of the Japan’s Top 100 Castles.

The Surviving Turrets

While most of the castle structures have not survived, two impressive three-story yagura (turrets) remain: the Tatsumi Turret and the Hitsujisaru Turret. Both are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
Historical records suggest that the Tatsumi Turret was relocated from Funage Castle, while the Hitsujisaru Turret is thought to have come from Fushimi Castle in Kyoto. These towers not only represent Edo-period castle design but also serve as physical connections to earlier castles.

Akashi Park Today

Today, the former castle grounds are preserved as Akashi Park, a spacious public garden known for seasonal beauty. In spring, around 1,400 cherry trees bloom around the moats, and in summer, water lilies decorate the ponds. The park is also a local hub for recreation, with walking paths, sports facilities, and cultural events throughout the year.

A Castle in the City

One of Akashi Castle’s unique features is its location. Situated immediately north of JR Akashi Station, the turrets and stone walls can even be seen from the train platform. Few castles in Japan offer such easy access and dramatic views from urban transit lines.

Akashi Castle offers both historical depth and modern accessibility.
