Along the quiet coast of Ashiya Town in Fukuoka Prefecture, something special happens each summer. At the Natsui-ga-hama Hamayu Self-Growing Area, delicate white blossoms of Crinum asiaticum, known locally as Hamayu, emerge from the sandy ground, creating a striking contrast with the blue sea and sky.

Designated as a Natural Monument of Fukuoka Prefecture, the site marks the northern limit of naturally growing Hamayu on mainland Kyushu. Around 1,000 Hamayu plants grow here, coming into bloom from around mid-July to early August. Their fresh green leaves and pure white flowers create a beautiful seasonal landscape beside the sea.

Pure White Elegance, Framed by Sea and Sky

Set against the Hibiki-nada Sea, the Hamayu blossoms offer a simple but memorable coastal scene. The flowers are especially beautiful in the soft light of the evening, when the nearby Natsui-ga-hama Hamayu Park provides a place to enjoy views across the sea.

The park's observation area is known as a scenic spot for watching the sunset, while the Kyōai no Kane, or “Bell of Shared Love,” creates a distinctive silhouette against the evening sky. The park has also been designated as a Lovers' Sanctuary, adding another layer of meaning to this peaceful coastal setting.

But the Hamayu offers another sensory experience after sunset. As darkness falls, the flowers begin to release a sweet fragrance, blending beautifully with the cool atmosphere of the coast.

A Quiet Coastal Escape

Although Natsui-ga-hama can be reached by car or local bus, its natural coastal setting feels removed from the pace of everyday life. The Hamayu self-growing area has a free parking area for 35 vehicles, while visitors using public transportation can take the Ashiya Town Bus from JR Ongagawa Station and get off at Natsui-ga-hama, followed by a walk of about five minutes.

The nearby coast also offers opportunities to enjoy shoreline play, making the area more than simply a place to admire seasonal flowers.
