Set in the tranquil surroundings of Buzen City, Fukuoka, Hōfukuji Azalea Park transforms into a vivid sea of color each spring. Known as one of the most famous azalea-viewing spots in the Keichiku area, the park offers visitors a chance to enjoy the beauty of Japan’s spring flowers in a peaceful setting.

A Sea of Blossoms in Spring

From late April to early May, about 3,000 azalea bushes, including Yodogawa and Kirishima azaleas, burst into bloom across the hillside. Red, white, and pink flowers cover the approximately 7,000-square-meter park, creating a spectacular seasonal landscape.

During the blooming season, the Hōfukuji Azalea Festival is held, adding to the lively atmosphere of this popular local flower-viewing spot.

Enjoy Azaleas by Day and Night

One of the special features of the festival is the many bonbori, or traditional paper lanterns, that are lit during the event. Visitors can enjoy the colorful azaleas in the daytime and experience a different, atmospheric view after dark.

The festival has been held since 1965, when it was started to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Buzen City. The azalea-covered hillside is the result of many years of local efforts to cultivate and maintain the area.
