Kobe Maritime Museum

Kobe Maritime Museum's sail-shaped white lattice illuminated at night beside the glowing Kobe Port Tower in Meriken Park — an iconic Kobe waterfront landmark.

A symbol of Kobe, the Kobe Maritime Museum stands in Meriken Park with its distinctive white roof inspired by the sails of a sailing ship and ocean waves. Opened in 1987 as part of the celebrations marking the 120th anniversary of the opening of modern Kobe Port, the museum was renovated in 2020. Today, it introduces the history and future of the sea, ships, and port through models, videos, graphics, and hands-on exhibits.

Inside, visitors can explore a variety of exhibits, including ship models, historical materials, and interactive experiences related to ships and port operations. The museum offers more than displays to look at, allowing visitors to learn about Kobe's maritime history through engaging and hands-on experiences.

Step into the fascinating world of Kobe’s maritime history and discover how this vibrant port city has developed alongside the sea.

Tracing the History of Kobe Port and Maritime Trade

Since opening to the world in 1868, Kobe Port has played an important role in Japan’s international trade and cultural exchange. At the museum, visitors can explore the development of the port from its early days to the present, while learning about the ships, cargo, cruise vessels, and international connections that have shaped Kobe’s maritime history.

The museum’s ship model collection traces the evolution of vessels from Western sailing ships to modern passenger and cargo ships. Exhibits also introduce the international exchange that has taken place through Kobe Port, including visiting passenger ships and sister ports and cities.

At the Ocean 3D Photo Spot, visitors can take fun photos using trick-art designs inspired by the sea, ships, and port. It offers a playful way to capture a memorable moment during a visit to the museum.

Another interactive highlight is the Port of Kobe Ship Handling Simulator, which allows visitors to experience navigating a ship through Kobe Port. The simulator recreates the port environment and offers different conditions, including weather and viewpoints, providing a hands-on introduction to the work of ship navigators.

Stunning Architecture and Waterfront Views

The museum’s distinctive architecture, inspired by the sails of a sailing ship and ocean waves, makes it a recognizable landmark in Kobe. During the day, its white structure stands out against the waterfront, while its illuminated appearance creates a striking sight after dark.

Located in Meriken Park, the museum is also close to Kobe Port Tower and the waterfront. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk through the park and take in views of the harbor and surrounding city.
