A Rare and Enchanting Sight: The "Phantom Waterfall"

There are many beautiful waterfalls in Japan, but Oshiraji Falls in Yaita, Tochigi Prefecture, offers a particularly unusual sight.

Known as a "phantom waterfall," Oshiraji Falls does not flow regularly because the stream usually has little water. After rainfall and when water conditions are favorable, however, the waterfall can appear against the surrounding forest. Even when the waterfall is dry, the clear blue pool remains, creating the distinctive scenery for which Oshiraji Falls is known.

Surrounded by the greenery of the mountains, the blue pool creates a peaceful and atmospheric landscape. The changing combination of sunlight, water, and forest makes the site especially beautiful when viewed from the observation area.

The Mesmerizing Blue Pool of Oshiraji Falls

The highlight of Oshiraji Falls is its clear blue pool, which remains even when the waterfall itself is not flowing.

The pool is surrounded by forest and rock, while sunlight filtering through the trees can enhance the vivid blue appearance of the water. Around midday, when sunlight shines down from above, the pool can take on an especially striking blue color.

Because the waterfall depends on weather and water conditions, visitors may encounter either the flowing waterfall or the tranquil blue pool alone. Both views offer a memorable glimpse of the natural landscape of Yaita.

A Scenic Walk Through the Forest

Oshiraji Falls is reached by a short walk through the forest. From Yama-no-Eki Takahara, drive approximately 2 km toward Nasushiobara. From the parking area near the trail entrance, it takes about 10 minutes to walk downhill along the trail to the waterfall's observation area.

The trail includes slippery and uneven sections, so sturdy footwear such as hiking shoes is recommended. Mobile phone service is also unavailable in the area, and visitors should take precautions because bears have been spotted nearby.

Visitors must remain behind the fence at the observation area. The area beyond the observation deck, including the vicinity of the pool, is off-limits.

Oshiraji Falls is a distinctive natural attraction whose appearance changes with the weather and water conditions. Sometimes visitors may see water cascading down the rock face; at other times, only the clear blue pool awaits beneath the forest canopy.

The combination of the mysterious blue water, surrounding greenery, and occasional waterfall makes Oshiraji Falls a memorable place to experience the quieter side of Tochigi's natural scenery.

Oshiraji Falls is accessible from the parking area about 2 km from Yama-no-Eki Takahara toward Nasushiobara, followed by a walk of approximately 10 minutes. The area is generally closed to access from early December through the end of March due to winter road restrictions.
