Welcome to Sano Yakuyoke Daishi

Located in Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture, Sano Yakuyoke Daishi is a historic Buddhist temple known for prayers for protection from misfortune and for good fortune. Its formal name is Soshuji, and it is one of the Kanto Three Daishi, a group of temples associated with Ganzan Daishi.

According to tradition, the temple was founded in 944 by Fujiwara no Hidesato. Today, it remains an important place of worship, with visitors coming throughout the year to pray for protection from misfortune, protection from harmful directions, and other blessings.

During the New Year holidays, the temple becomes especially lively, welcoming around one million visitors for the annual festival. At other times of the year, visitors can experience the temple grounds at a quieter pace.

Feel the History and Culture of Japan

Sano Yakuyoke Daishi has a history dating back more than a thousand years. Its connection with Fujiwara no Hidesato and its long tradition of Buddhist worship make it a place where visitors can encounter an important part of Sano’s religious and cultural heritage.

The temple is also associated with the Tokugawa shogunate. When the remains of Tokugawa Ieyasu were transferred from Kunozan to Nikko, they are said to have stayed at the temple for one night.

The temple grounds also contain the grave of Tanaka Shozo, a Japanese politician and social activist known for his efforts on behalf of victims of the Ashio Copper Mine pollution. A bronze bell created in 1658 by 105 Tenmyo metalworkers can also be found on the grounds. Designated as a cultural property of Sano City, the bell is a notable example of Tenmyo casting, a traditional craft with a long history in the region.

A Place of Prayer and Tradition

For centuries, people have visited Sano Yakuyoke Daishi to pray for protection from misfortune and other blessings. The temple continues these traditions today, offering prayers for matters including health, family safety, business prosperity, success in studies, and safe travel.
