Located in the Kurosaki area of Kitakyushu, Shiroyama Ryokuchi (Shiroyama Green Space) combines the remains of a historic castle with the natural beauty of a green hilltop park. Once the site of Kurosaki Castle, built in the early 17th century as one of the six branch castles of Fukuoka Castle, the area now offers a peaceful place to explore history and enjoy views over the city.

A Walk Through History

Kurosaki Castle was built in 1604 by order of Kuroda Nagamasa to strengthen the defense of the border of Chikuzen. The castle was later abandoned following the One-Castle-per-Province Order of 1615. Archaeological investigations have uncovered remains including stone walls and former castle enclosures, offering glimpses into the structure of the former stronghold. The site is now designated as a Fukuoka Prefecture Historic Site.

As you walk around the hilltop, these remnants provide a tangible connection to the history of the early Edo period and the role Kurosaki Castle once played in the region.

Cherry Blossoms and Panoramic Views

Shiroyama Ryokuchi is also known for its cherry blossoms. Around 300 Somei Yoshino cherry trees surround the hilltop plaza, creating a beautiful spring landscape. The usual viewing season is from late March to early April.

From the hilltop observation area, visitors can enjoy wide views of the surrounding city, including Mount Sarakura and Dokai Bay. In spring, the combination of cherry blossoms, historic remains, and the cityscape makes the park a particularly attractive place to visit.
