Suisui: A Centuries-Old Garden Inn

A State Guest House Where East Meets West, Weaving Together History

Built in harmony with a Japanese garden that has been in existence for 130 years since the Meiji era, “Suisui: Inn of the Centennial Garden” features three guest buildings, each a unique architectural masterpiece showcasing the sophisticated and masterful techniques of traditional Sukiya carpenters throughout.

Our inn is registered as a “Registered Tangible Cultural Property (Structure)” by the Japanese government.

Upon registration, we received the following evaluation: “It holds significant value as a leading example of modern Sukiya architecture, successfully integrating modern amenities and innovative design while demonstrating the advanced and authentic techniques of Sukiya carpentry within a traditional Sukiya framework.”

Furthermore, our Japanese garden was completed in 1889 on the estate of Mr. Kizaburo Yamamoto, owner of the Toyokuni Coal Mine. Today, it spans approximately 700 tsubo and is maintained by professional gardeners as a stroll-style garden centered around a pond and pine groves.

Amid the urbanization of Kokura, “Suisui” has passed down through generations the desire to preserve this landscape for future generations.

Here, you can witness the essence of Japanese culture, imbued with the spirit of “suki” (a love of the refined and the beautiful), which has been passed down to the present day without losing its luster.
