Discover the Future of Sustainability in Japan

Kitakyushu, a city known for its industrial history and environmental initiatives, is home to the Takamiya Environmental Museum. Located in the Higashida area, this unique environmental learning facility introduces visitors to Kitakyushu’s history of overcoming industrial pollution, global environmental issues, and ways to create a more sustainable future.

Since opening as a pavilion at the Kitakyushu Expo in 2001, the museum has served as a place for environmental learning and a hub for environmental activities. Its exhibits and programs encourage visitors to see, touch, and enjoy while learning about the environment.

A Museum that Tells the Story of Transformation

The museum traces Kitakyushu’s transformation from a major industrial center facing serious pollution to a city working toward a more sustainable future.

Its five exhibition zones explore the region’s history before and after the establishment of the government-run Yawata Steel Works, the history of industrial pollution and its overcoming, carbon neutrality, resource recycling, renewable energy, and examples of Kitakyushu’s initiatives as an SDGs Future City.

Interactive Exhibits for a Hands-On Experience

The museum offers many ways to explore environmental topics through interactive and hands-on learning.

In the third zone, visitors can learn about carbon neutrality while seeing and interacting with exhibits. The fourth zone focuses on resource recycling and renewable energy, while the Eco House demonstrates technologies and ideas for reducing household CO₂ emissions.

The museum also offers hands-on environmental learning programs, including recycling games, food-loss card games, eco-friendly crafts, quizzes, workshops, and even simple experiments exploring hydrogen power generation. These activities make complex environmental topics accessible and engaging.

Explore the Museum Online

The museum also provides online resources for those who want to learn more before or after a visit.

These resources offer another way to discover Kitakyushu’s environmental journey and learn about the issues presented at the museum.

Why Visit the Takamiya Environmental Museum?

For travelers interested in sustainability, environmental innovation, or Kitakyushu’s industrial history, the museum offers a different perspective on the city.

Rather than simply presenting environmental issues, it connects the history of pollution and its resolution with everyday actions, new technologies, and the future of sustainable communities. Visitors can learn not only about Kitakyushu’s past, but also consider what individuals and communities can do for a greener future.
