Umi Terrace Buzen: A Gateway to Buzen’s Coastal Bounty

Umi Terrace Buzen exterior — a wooden two-story fishermen's market and seafood restaurant with a blue roof on the Buzen coast, Fukuoka.

Discovering the Coastal Treasure

Located along the coast of Buzen City in Fukuoka Prefecture, Umi Terrace Buzen is a seafood destination operated by the Hochiku Fisheries Cooperative Association.

With its direct connection to local fisheries, the facility offers visitors a chance to experience freshly caught seafood, shop for local products, and enjoy the flavors of the Buzen coast.

Immersive Experiences Await

1. Fresh Seafood Market – “Shiki Shunkai”

On the first floor, Shiki Shunkai is a direct seafood market where fishermen belonging to the fisheries cooperative sell their own catches. Live fish are kept in tanks, and fish brought in directly from fishing trips are sometimes sold as soon as the boats return.

If requested, staff can also clean and prepare whole fish for customers, for an additional fee. When handing over the fish, they are happy to share suggestions on how to prepare and enjoy the catch, offering a small glimpse into the knowledge of local fishing communities.

The market also sells Buzen-grown vegetables, locally made processed foods, and dried seafood prepared by fishermen.

2. Fisherman’s Restaurant – “Unoshima Houchikumaru”

On the second floor, the Unoshima Houchikumaru fisherman’s restaurant serves set meals featuring seasonal seafood landed by boats belonging to the fisheries cooperative. The menu changes with the seasons, allowing visitors to enjoy different local catches throughout the year.

During the winter oyster season, the separate Umi Goya opens as an oyster hut-style seafood barbecue house. Despite its name, it is not limited to oysters. Seafood purchased at Shiki Shunkai—including oysters, crab, shrimp, and fish—can be brought to the barbecue space and grilled there.

Embracing the Essence of Coastal Japan

Umi Terrace Buzen is more than a seafood market. It brings together a fishermen’s direct market, a seasonal seafood restaurant, and a winter barbecue experience in one place.

For travelers interested in discovering the food culture of coastal Fukuoka, Umi Terrace Buzen offers an authentic taste of the Buzen Sea and the fishing communities that depend on it.
