Yaizu Sakana Center: A Seafood Paradise in Shizuoka

The Culinary Heart of Yaizu

Since its opening in 1985, the Yaizu Sakana Center has become one of the city’s most iconic attractions, embodying Yaizu’s identity as a port town. With around 60 shops under one roof, the market offers everything from fresh tuna and crab to dried fish, shirasu (whitebait), nori, and local delicacies. Just walking through the bustling aisles—filled with the aroma of the sea and the energy of the market—makes for an unforgettable travel experience.

Tuna and Beyond — A Dazzling Variety of Seafood

Yaizu is synonymous with tuna, and the Sakana Center lives up to that reputation. Counters are lined with natural southern bluefin and Pacific bluefin tuna, sold in thick, glistening cuts or whole sections ready for display. Seasonal bonito, mackerel, horse mackerel, shirasu, and even Suruga Bay’s rare sakura shrimp add to the incredible variety. Visitors can purchase fresh seafood to take away or have it shipped, carrying the taste of Japan home with them.

A Market Where You Can Eat on the Spot

The Sakana Center isn’t just a place to shop—it’s also a place to eat. Among its dining spots, the popular Ikiki Sakana Daishokudo Nagisa serves generous sushi platters, sashimi bowls, and hearty set meals. For travelers, the chance to enjoy seafood that was practically “just landed” is a highlight, turning a meal into a true immersion in Yaizu’s fishing culture.

Easy to Reach, Hard to Forget

Conveniently located just one minute by car from the Yaizu I.C. on the Tomei Expressway, the Sakana Center is an easy stop on any Shizuoka itinerary. Open daily from 9:00 to 17:00 (closed only on January 1 and for occasional maintenance), it’s a welcoming spot for families, groups, and independent travelers alike.

The Gateway to Yaizu’s Food Culture

With its world-class tuna, abundant seafood, on-site dining, and lively atmosphere, the Yaizu Sakana Center is more than a market—it’s the perfect introduction to Yaizu’s culinary heritage. For first-time visitors, it’s a place where all five senses can savor the essence of this famous fishing town.
