Kunitama Shrine: A Sacred Sanctuary of Nature, Heritage, and Tradition in Fukuoka’s Countryside

Where Timeless Spirituality Meets Living Tradition

Tucked away on the forested slopes of Mount Kubote in Buzen City, Kunitama Shrine offers a unique blend of spiritual heritage, natural beauty, and living tradition. Long regarded as a center of Kubote religious faith, the shrine has deep connections with the mountain ascetic tradition of Shugendo and the history of Mount Kubote.

A Shrine Embraced by Nature and History

Mount Kubote has long been a sacred site associated with Shugendo, the Japanese mountain ascetic tradition. At the mid-slope of the mountain, Kunitama Shrine’s Chugu, or Middle Shrine, stands amid the forest, while the Jogu, or Upper Shrine, is located near the summit.

Mount Kubote offers beautiful scenery throughout the seasons, from fresh greenery in spring and summer to colorful foliage in autumn and a quiet winter landscape. The mountain also preserves numerous historic remains connected with the religious practices of the yamabushi, or mountain ascetics.

A Cultural Treasure: The Otaue Rice Planting Festival

One of Kunitama Shrine’s most fascinating traditions is the Otaue Festival, held annually in late March. The festival is designated as a Fukuoka Prefecture Intangible Folk Cultural Property and forms part of Matsue, the largest traditional festival of Mount Kubote.

The Otaue Festival is a ritual held to celebrate an abundant harvest in advance. Performers known as Matsuyaku, together with children, humorously reenact a series of agricultural activities, from sowing seeds to harvesting rice.

The festival is the surviving rice-field ritual, or ta-gyoji, of the former Matsue tradition. Historical records indicate that the festival was already being held by the medieval period, making it a valuable example of a traditional ritual that has been passed down through generations.

Discover the Spiritual Heritage of Mount Kubote

Kunitama Shrine offers visitors an opportunity to experience the spiritual and cultural heritage of Mount Kubote in a natural setting. From the historic connection with Shugendo to the traditional Otaue Festival, the shrine reveals how religious practices and community traditions have been preserved over the centuries.
