Located in Kitakyushu’s Kokura district, the Zenrin Museum offers a fascinating journey through history as seen through maps. Opened in 2020, the museum introduces approximately 120 maps and related materials created from the 16th to the 20th century, with a focus on Western and Japanese maps depicting Japan. Through these historical maps, visitors can explore how Japan was viewed and represented in different eras.

Rather than simply showing maps as geographical records, the museum explores the history, culture, and people behind them, revealing the stories hidden within each map.

Maps as Storytellers Across Centuries

The museum’s exhibits trace how Japan came to be depicted on maps, from Western maps created during the Age of Exploration to maps based on increasingly accurate surveys of Japan. The exhibits also explore how maps changed as Japanese society developed and their purposes expanded.

One of the museum’s distinctive features is its team of knowledgeable Z Curators. They explain the historical background and stories behind the maps, offering insights that may not be conveyed through exhibition texts alone.

The museum also holds special exhibitions and other programs in addition to its permanent collection. On opening days, Z Curators offer 30-minute guided tours, providing an opportunity to explore selected exhibits while learning more about the people, history, and ideas behind the maps.

Conveniently located in Riverwalk Kitakyushu, Zenrin Museum is about a 10-minute walk from JR Kokura Station and just five minutes from JR Nishi-Kokura Station. The museum’s reception is on the 4th floor, while the exhibition space is on the 14th floor.

The museum is also close to attractions such as Kokura Castle and Riverwalk Kitakyushu, making it easy to combine a visit with sightseeing in the Kokura area.
