Born in 1909 in what is now Kitakyushu, Matsumoto Seicho began his career as a writer relatively late, making his full-fledged literary debut in his forties. In 1953, A Story of a Kokura Diary won the Akutagawa Prize, establishing his reputation as a writer.

In 1958, Points and Lines and The Wall became bestsellers, helping to spark a boom in social mystery fiction in Japan. Seicho later expanded his creative work beyond fiction into nonfiction, biography, ancient history, and modern history, developing a body of work that explored people, society, and the past.

His works have also been adapted for film and television, and his influence continues to be explored through research and exhibitions at the museum.

A Journey Through the World of Matsumoto Seicho

1. Explore His Recreated Home and Study

One of the museum’s most distinctive features is the recreation of Seicho’s home, known as the “Castle of Reflection and Creation.”

The two-story residence, originally located in Takaido, Tokyo, was recreated at the museum in the form it had when Seicho died in 1992. Visitors can explore his study, library, reception room, and other spaces that convey the environment in which he pursued his writing and research.

The library contains approximately 23,000 books, offering a glimpse into the extensive research that supported Seicho’s creative work.

2. Discover the Full Range of His Creative Work

The main exhibition introduces Seicho’s diverse literary activities through exhibits and graphic panels. A large 22-meter-long chronological display traces his life alongside news footage from the periods in which he lived.

The exhibition also introduces approximately 700 books attributed to his works, covering areas such as contemporary fiction, mystery novels, historical fiction, modern history, and ancient history.

3. Experience Seicho’s Works Through Film and Visual Exhibits

The museum also uses film and visual materials to introduce Seicho’s world. One of the museum’s original productions, The Black Fog of Japan: A Distant Illumination, explores his nonfiction work The Black Fog of Japan through documentary footage, photographs, and other historical materials.

The basement also includes a reading room where visitors can freely browse Seicho’s works and related materials.

The Matsumoto Seicho Memorial Museum offers more than an introduction to a famous mystery writer. It presents the many sides of Seicho’s creative career, from social mystery fiction to historical research, while also showing the books, spaces, and materials that supported his work.
