Located in Maebashi, Gunma, Rinkokaku is a historic group of wooden buildings dating from the Meiji period. Built as a reception facility and guesthouse for dignitaries, Rinkokaku consists of a main hall, an annex, and a tea house. Together, these buildings offer a glimpse into the architectural style and history of Japan during a period of rapid change.

Today, all three buildings are designated as National Important Cultural Properties, reflecting their significant historical and architectural value.

A Historic Group of Buildings

Rinkokaku consists of three buildings, each with its own character.

The main hall, completed in 1884, was built as a reception facility with support from the local community. Its design reflects the refined character of modern Japanese architecture, with traditional rooms and a sukiya-style aesthetic.

The tea house, also completed in 1884, is a simple and understated soan tea house designed in the spirit of wabi. The annex, built in 1910 as a guest facility for the National Industrial Exhibition, features a shoin-style design and includes both Japanese-style rooms and a large Western-style room.
