A Temple Founded Through a Connection with Naritasan Shinshoji

Naritasan Fudoji Temple in Okagaki, Fukuoka — green-roofed main hall with red railings set against wooded hills, a peaceful hillside retreat.

Naritasan Fudoji Temple is a temple of the Shingon Sennyūji-ha school of Buddhism. It was founded in 1964, when a statue of Fudo Myo-o was brought from Naritasan Shinshoji Temple, the head temple of the Chisan School of Shingon Buddhism in Narita, Chiba Prefecture.

Fudo Myo-o, the temple’s principal deity, is revered as a powerful Buddhist figure associated with protection and the overcoming of obstacles. The temple continues to welcome visitors for prayers and Buddhist ceremonies, including Goma fire rituals, in which prayer sticks are offered into a sacred fire.

Seasonal Beauty and a Spectacular Coastal View

One of the temple’s greatest attractions is the scenery from its elevated grounds. Sanri Matsubara, with its green pine trees and sandy coastline, stretches below, creating a striking contrast with the blue sea. On clear days, the view extends far across the surrounding area.

The landscape changes with the seasons, while spring brings particular attention to the temple and the road leading to it. The Yugawayama Sakura Road, which runs from the foot of the mountain toward Naritasan Fudoji Temple, is lined with hundreds of cherry trees and becomes a beautiful tunnel of blossoms in spring.

A Place Where Spirituality and Scenery Meet

For visitors interested in Japanese Buddhist culture and scenic landscapes, Naritasan Fudoji Temple offers an opportunity to experience both in one setting. Beyond its role as a place of worship, the temple provides a peaceful vantage point from which to appreciate the natural beauty of Okagaki.

Experience the Serenity of Naritasan Fudoji

Take a moment to visit the temple, offer a prayer before Fudo Myo-o, and enjoy the expansive views from the hillside. In spring, the journey to the temple becomes especially scenic as the cherry trees along Yugawayama Sakura Road come into bloom.
