Yugawayama, a hidden scenic spot in Okagaki, Fukuoka: A beginner-friendly hike with a view

Quiet Trails with Ocean Horizon

Rising 471 meters above sea level, Yugawayama (Mt. Yugawa) is a hidden gem on the border of Okagaki and Munakata in Fukuoka Prefecture. This peaceful mountain offers sweeping views of Genkai Bay and the iconic Sanri Matsubara pine coast—making it a favorite for locals in search of tranquility and open sky.

Cherry Blossom Paths and Family-Friendly Trails

Yugawayama’s hiking routes are well-maintained and suitable for all levels. The most beloved trail, called “Sakura no Komichi” (Cherry Path), becomes a tunnel of blossoms each spring. The ascent is gentle, typically taking about 1–2 hours to the summit, making it perfect for families or casual hikers.

Surrounded by white sand, green pines and the azure of the sea

Sanri Matsubara, overlooked from the top of the mountain, is truly a “white sand and green pine” landscape of pine forests and white sand beaches stretching from Okagaki Town to Ashiya Town. The blue of the Genkainada Sea, the white of the waves and sand, and the deep green of the pine grove create an exquisite contrast. This beautiful beach is also known as a place where loggerhead turtles visit every year to lay their eggs, and it is truly a place where nature and life come alive.

Healing by Nature, an Observatory for the Soul

Yugawayama is easily accessible by a 15-minute cab ride from JR Ebitsu Station. It is recommended to have lunch time at the top of the mountain or take a walk around Sanri Matsubara and Hazu Beach after climbing the mountain. Take some time to get away from your daily routine, walk at your own pace, and spend some time communing with the breath of nature. Here you will find the “quiet and luxurious time” that only Okagaki-cho can offer.
